AMANDA MEYER, FOUNDER AND DESIGNER FOX & MOON, IN CAPE TOWN

Amanda Meyer is the incredibly talented mother behind Fox and Moon, a stunning South African kids brand and online shop, offering eco-friendly designer nursery decor. Although Amanda has been designing for as long as she can remember – she was sewing and designing doll clothes at 8 years old – her move to Cape Town in 2008 gave her the extra boost she needed to turn her passion into a career. "Cape Town is a designer's dream" she explains. "There is inspiration everywhere you look and the resources are endless."

IN CAPE TOWN WITH AMANDA MEYER

Eating out with the kidsOstrich Ranch. When I think of kids and food, I immediately think of this place. This is a gem that not many people have heard of. The grounds are pristine and big enough to tire even the busiest child out! They have tables set outside under the trees, with a playground just far enough away to allow parents to relax. The food is also amazing, think ostrich burgers and steaks. If that hasn't sold you yet, they also offer guided tours of the ostriches, allowing you to meet and feed them, as well as meet the world’s smallest ostrich, Tom Thumb! The kids really love going here and we normally go about 4 – 6 times in Summer.

An outdoor activity with the kidsCape Town weather can be a bit tricky; we always say we have 4 seasons in one day here! Because of the temperamental weather you have to plan your outings carefully but, in saying that, there is always lots to do even if the weather does change on you. One of our favorite spots to go picnicking in is the Green Point Urban Park. It’s always buzzing with kids scooting around on their bikes, or skates, on the beautifully crafted paths. It also has two play areas which are divided according to age, making it perfect if you have really small littlies knowing they're not going to be knocked over by some older kiddos! When they are finished running around there we normally walk just over the road to the Blue Train Park which offers ice-skating, train rides and massive jungle gyms.

An indoor activity with the kids. Clay Cafe. They have large premises, so the more the merrier! The kids get to choose an item they would like to paint (very reasonably priced) and the artwork and fun begins! They also have a small coffee shop for you to sit, sip away, and perhaps even paint something yourself! It really is such a fun place for all.

A cultural activity with the kids. The South African Museum. There is just so much to look at here; it keeps the kids busy for hours! They also have a Planetarium that has shows regularly throughout the day so make sure you are in time for one of those!

Shopping for the kidsKids Living. This store is so beautifully laid out, it is a must for every new mom. Sandra, the owner, has set up each station in a specific themed nursery with both local and international products from top designers on display. It is truly eye candy for moms – the amount of choices and stock just outdo all other stores.

Amiti Shop. Great for gifts for the entire family! This place is a gem tucked away in the City Sightseeing Cape Town building, which is a bonus because you can catch the red hop-on hop-off bus from your hotel. Kids always think buses equal adventure so it’s a win-win! When you walk in you can leave Dad at the Kamili Coffee Shop which offers lovely macaroons and tasty treats to keep him occupied whilst you shop up a storm downstairs. The shop offers all Proudly South African products which ranges from adult clothing to baby clothing, home decor, nursery decor, art prints and jewelry to die for!  This is a store we recommend to anyone and everyone!

Keeping up with local kid-friendly activities. Child Magazine Cape Town. It always has a feast of things for children! From great books to awesome holiday venues it even has some great advice topics. Best of all is that it is free! Such a great magazine!
